I was recently lucky enough to join Dr. Avi Charlton on her podcast, Prescribing Lifestyle, to talk about the challenges of navigating life with lipoedema.
Dr. Charlton is a Lifestyle GP, author and the founder of the Melbourne Low Carb Clinic. Her practice (and new book!) focusses on the importance of metabolic health, a real food diet and other important lifestyle pillars to optimise health outcomes.
Dr Charlton sees a number of lipoedema patients in her practice – which is not surprising at all considering her deep expertise in low carb diet, and the how beneficial this dietary approach is for lipoedema management.
Her approach of creating longterm lifestyle change resonates deeply with me, as someone with lipoedema – daily lifestyle changes and low carb diet have been fundamental in my journey to reducing pain and swelling, and restoring some balance in my body.
A snapshot of what we cover in this podcast episode:
-
My 12-Year Diagnosis Journey: The challenges and discoveries along the way.
-
Common Treatments: The role of diet, compression therapy, and particularly, shockwave therapy in managing lipoedema.
-
Advocacy and Awareness: The importance of educating both patients and practitioners.

And if you’re interested in learning more about Lifestyle Medicine, highly recommend checking Dr Charlton’s podcast backlog here – the breadth of information and knowledge she (and podcast guests) shares is phenomenal. Two of my personal faves, that are also beneficial learning for managing lipoedema:
Episode 78. Functional Breathing Essentials
Episode 81. Lets talk about menopause
